Join world-renowned jazz pianist Chuchito Valdés and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Oscar Hijuelos (The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love) to celebrate Cuban culture through music, readings, food, wine and lively conversation. The evening features a performance by Valdés and reading by Hijuelos, followed by a discussion with the artists, who will explore the influences of Europe, Africa and North America on their work and on Cuba’s cultural landscape. Hosted by Ina Howard-Parker.
Oscar Hijuelos (Columbia.edu)
Raised in Havana, Jesus “Chuchito” Valdés has inherited more than his father's famous name; he displays the hell-bent intensity and daredevil technique of the elder Valdes-qualities recognized worldwide as hallmarks of Cuban Jazz.
—Neil Tesser, author of The Playboy Guide to Jazz
Oscar Hijuelos forces the Hispanic immigrant experience close to the center of our cultural consciousness, where it very much deserves to be.
