On-Demand Video: Leonard Lopate on the Best of New York's Delis

Thursday, October 16, 2014

Known for their overstuffed sandwiches, cured meats and knishes, New York City’s storied delicatessens are cultural landmarks in their own right.

In part two of his fifth annual Lopate and Locavores food series, WNYC’s Leonard Lopate took us through a delicious history of the city's delis live in The Greene Space. His culinary guides were authors and food writers Arthur Schwartz (former restaurant critic for the New York Daily News and now known as The Food Maven) and Joan Nathan (Quiches, Kugels, and Couscous: My Search for Jewish Cooking in France).

They talked corned beef, rugelach, bagels and bialys - and capped the evening with a pastrami showdown between Katz's Delicatessen, Carnegie Deli, Sarge's Deli, Ben's Best Kosher Delicatessen, Junior's and Jay and Lloyd's. The conversation was recorded live on October 15, 2014.
