On-Demand Video: Soundcheck's Gigstock with Conor Oberst, James Vincent McMorrow
Friday, April 11, 2014
Soundcheck closed its two-day mini music fest with another sold-out show April 10 featuring two outstanding singer-songwriters: Conor Oberst and James Vincent McMorrow.
Best known for albums released under the name Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst has also been a solo artist and a collaborator in the indie super-group Monsters of Folk, the Omaha punk band Desaparecidos and other ensembles. Before he sets out on a world tour with Dawes serving as his backing band and opening act, Oberst talked with Soundcheck's John Schaefer about his upcoming album, Upside Down Mountain, and performed songs from it in a stripped-down sneak preview.
He was joined by Dublin-based musician James Vincent McMorrow, who traveled to a pecan farm in Mexico to make his second album, Post Tropical, which he wrote, performed and produced himself. McMorrow stepped outside the comfort zone established by his acclaimed 2011 debut and embraced R&B, hip hop and experimental sounds. On tour with a backing band, McMorrow performed solo on The Greene Space stage – returning to the environmental conditions that led to Post Tropical.
