Battle of the Boroughs: Staten Island Winner

Monday, May 12, 2014

Nine undiscovered musical acts from Staten Island competed on The Greene Space's stage during a live concert on May 2, 2014. Then, voters chose their top five. Now, after a week of voting, there's only one act standing!

The 2014 Staten Island representative in our Battle of the Boroughs is...Leila Hegazy! The singer-songwriter moves on to the final showdown, the Ultimate Battle of the Boroughs on June 27. She'll compete against the other borough winners — including Manhattan's 5j Barrow, Queen's Annika and the Bronx's Royal Khaoz — for bragging rights and prizes, including a showcase performance at the world famous Apollo Theater Amateur Night.

Congrats to all the acts who competed!

Next stop in the Battle of the Boroughs: Brooklyn takes the stage on Friday, June 6.

Wow your voice is still as stunning as I remember it from High School. Your transitions still give me chills and the melodies raise up the hairs on my arms. Whatever you're doing, you're doing it right!!! Woop woop!

he's talented. She's talented in the sense that she can play the piano and sing at the same time. As a pianist for many years, that's very good. But what she's doing is wholly unoriginal and kind of nasally. I think that artists of a unique nature are a direct representation of their community. This is neither unique nor impressive. I wouldn't want to visit her community. The voting regimen for contests like this can be easily skewed in favor of the unoriginal, as a lifelong New Yorker, things like this are the death of underground artistry. But she's very pretty to look at and that's a big part of it too.
