Watch the next installment of our new project reinventing language around race through conversations and performances that examine what it means when a social construct becomes the social order.

Beyond Sacred: Voices of Muslim Identity is an interview-based theatre production by Ping Chong + Company exploring the diverse experiences of young Muslim New Yorkers. The five participants in Beyond Sacred vary in many ways, but share the common experience of coming of age in a post-9/11 New York City, at a time of increasing Islamophobia. The goal of Beyond Sacred is to illuminate daily experiences of Muslim new Yorkers, and work towards greater communication and understanding among Muslim and non-Muslim communities in NYC.

Rebecca Carroll, WNYC's producer for special projects on race, hosts a talkback after the hour-long performance.

How I Got Over

This event is part of new project reinventing language around race through a series of conversations and performances that explore, express and examine what it means when a social construct becomes the social order. We want people to get personal. We want provocative dialogue. We want to generate new language to execute real change. We want to talk about fear – and how it’s different if you are black or white. We want to hear people explore racism.

I happened to hear about ping chong's theatre piece, beyond sacred: voices of Muslim identity as I listened briefly to the news a few days earlier. The show was fantastic. so clear, so moving, so well structured, so relevant to today's world. What a treat, especially as a substitute for Fresh Air, which is rarely fresh, unlike unlike Chong's piece. Any chance you can have more theatre pieces by producers like ping chong that really speak to the important issues in today's world. Congratulations to you, Mr. Chong, and kudos to all the Muslim performers I had the pleasure of hearing last night. What a great way to begin the new year!
