Peter Gerety in The Greene Space's production of 'Dubliners: A Quartet'

Matthew Septimus

Overview

Watch an encore video stream of The Dead, an original audio play written by award-winning playwright Arthur Yorinks. Inspired by the celebrated James Joyce short story of the same name, it explores love, loss and the nature of Irish identity.

The play was recorded live on our stage in June 2014 as part of Dubliners: A Quartet, a collection of four plays Yorinks wrote commemorating the 100th anniversary of Joyce’s beloved work depicting Irish middle class life in the early 20th century.

Watch at 4pm ET:

Yorinks’ quartet drew from four of Joyce’s stories: Araby, Eveline, Clay and The Dead. The first three represent the stages of life in Joyce’s work: childhood, adolescence and maturity. The Dead completes the suite. (Watch the first three parts of the play here.)

Performed in one evening by a company of noted actors, the play was co-directed by Jim Simpson, then-artistic director of The Flea Theater, and presented in association with the Irish Arts Center.

A single company of noted actors performed all four parts of the play in one evening in this multi-faceted celebration of Joyce’s work and influence on modern literature in the early part of the 20th-century. Jim Simpson, Artistic Director of The Flea Theater in Tribeca, co-directed with Yorinks. Edward Barnes, Producing Director of The Collegiate Chorale, served as musical director, arranging the traditional Irish music performed live. Sarah Montague served as dramaturg.
