Soundcheck Live with Kaki King and Punch Brothers

Wednesday April 25 2012 • 2:00pm - 2:00pm
Punch Brothers

Overview

Join host John Schaefer in the Greene Space as Soundcheck presents an hour with modern-day guitar hero Kaki King and Punch Brothers led by mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile.

Musician and composer Kaki King creates rich sound textures with her six-string skills – so well, in fact, that Rolling Stone placed her on its list of “The New Guitar Gods” a few years back. After releasing her latest album, “Junior,” in 2010, she toured as a solo musician (taking along some rare instruments for company, including a harp guitar and a hybrid guitar-koto) and crafted film music for the blockbuster Twilight and Sean Penn’s Into the Wild. Her most recent project is a score for silent film star Buster Keaton’s 1920 film “The Scarecrow,” which debuted in January.

Punch Brothers just aren’t as young as they used to be – but that’s not saying much, considering that frontman Chris Thile recorded his first album with bluegrass band Nickel Creek at the age of 11. However, on Punch Brothers’ latest record, Who’s Feeling Young Now?, the five-piece band (now all in their mature mid-20s to early-30s) seems more energetic than ever. The group brings their rollicking string-band rock to the Greene Space for a live performance.
