Aasif Mandvi live in The Greene Space

Actor and comedian Aasif Mandvi joined us live in The Greene Space on Thursday, April 9 to kick off our Muslim/American series with a screening of his new web show, “Halal in the Family.”

Mandvi, “Senior Muslim Correspondent” for The Daily Show and author of No Land’s Man, created the series to challenge stereotypes about Muslim Americans. Starring Mandvi and Sakina Jaffrey (“House of Cards”), the show is shot in the style of a 1980s family sitcom and follows the lives of an “all-American” Muslim family while taking on the big issues of the day, from government surveillance to online bullying.

The screening was followed by a funny and thought-provoking talkback with Mandvi and director and co-writer Miles Kahn, hosted by comedian Dean Obeidallah. They talked about the series and the many mainstream television depictions of Muslims that have inspired it.
