2014 Battle of the Boroughs: The Contestants

Friday, January 10, 2014

Six battles. Five boroughs. One ultimate winner.

Our Battle of the Boroughs is back for a fifth season! We're looking for this year's best undiscovered performer in New York City. Hundreds of submissions poured in and this year we took the Battle to the streets for the first time, holding live auditions in music venues across the five boroughs.

We dug through all of the entries, and this year's crop of talent didn't disappoint. From Arabian-influenced metal and gypsy/cabaret to rock-reggae and an all-woman drum circle, the 60 musical acts we've chosen span all genres and capture the energy and diversity of the city’s music scene.

We’ll host five borough concerts emceed by WQXR's Terrance McKnight, with in-studio and online audiences voting for their favorite act until we’re left with one finalist from each borough. They'll move on to the final showdown - the Ultimate Battle on June 27 - where they'll battle for bragging rights and prizes - including a showcase appearance at the famed Apollo Theater

Thanks to all the talented performers who entered! And be sure to join the conversation on Twitter with #TGSBattle

And now...the 2014 Battle of the Boroughs contestants:

The link for Aabaraki can't possibly be correct. It goes to a website in Japan (Abaraki). To be fair to them in this competition, please fix this.

The Hue-man Ethnic Movement’s music could be categorized as hip-hop. Although, many fans and critics say that they haven't heard hip-hop quite like this. It’s new, innovative, intelligent, and honest. Their music deals with awareness and the emotions of just being human. The Hue-man Ethnic Movements’ goal is to bring the planet closer together, regardless of our differences, through the inspiration of music. CHECK OUT THEIR MUSIC AT https://themovement.bandcamp.com/ AND MUSIC VIDEO!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=qotmOOrLFUY

No. I'm not bitter.

It is well within reasonable and polite discourse to point out that they're neglecting their listening audience on this count.

For the 5th straight year - and despite ample feedback discouraging them from doing so - WNYC is again excluding many, many people from this contest. These folks are in the listening audience, within reach of the radio signals, and they support the station with both membership and campaign contributions.

It's a point which needs to be made.

hey alan, bitter much? its called battle of the boroughs, not battle of the eastern seaboard.

Setting a new record for musical irrelevance, New Jersey, Westchester, Long Island, and Connecticut have ceased to exist for 5 straight years!

Congratulations to all the pathetic and amateurish bands who live in the wrong ZIP codes.

@Tim I'm sure WNYC has no control of the genres of the band that apply. Perhaps no classical musicians auditioned/applied this year, or the ones who did were not very good. I have seen classical musicians in the contest in the past, and they were even finalists.

Jan. 17 2014 10:32 AM

How about ANY classical music? "All genres" is a charade!
