Soundcheck CMJ Showcase

Friday October 19 2012 • 7:00pm - 7:00pm ET
In-person event

Overview

Over 5 nonstop days and nights, one of the world’s most important platforms for the discovery of emerging music will showcase more than 1,300 artists, feature 90+ industry panels and seminars, plus special events and parties in over 80 of the city’s premier venues.

WNYC’s Soundcheck joins the melee with its own CMJ showcase live in The Greene Space.  Host John Schaefer welcomes MNDRDave Hill, Debo Band and The Luyas for an eclectic evening of ground breaking music, comedy, conversation and fun.  Join us for what is sure to be an exciting night!

MNDR

New York musician and vocalist MNDR (a.k.a. Amanda Warner) makes party-starting electro-pop. But her debut full length Feed Me Diamonds isn’t just about infectious grooves – it’s also a reflection on global economics, performance art, and pop culture. MNDR joins us in the Greene Space with her shimmering synth anthems.

Dave Hill

For comedian Dave Hill, the electric guitar is more than an onstage prop. Wailing solos are a hallmark of his stand-up act – and his career with indie bands like Valley Lodge, Cobra Verde and Diamondsnake (Moby’s metal band). He joins us in the Greene Space with his shred-tastic brand of comedy – and a new book of essays called “Tasteful Nudes.”

Debo Band

Debo Band is a horn-heavy, groove-based band from Boston; but the music they play comes from another place and another time.  Namely, “Swinging Addis,” as the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa was known in the late 60s and early 70s. Debo Band recreates the so-called Golden Age of Ethiopian pop with their high-octane set, live in the Greene Space.

The Luyas

The Luyas’ hazy pop songs marry vintage keyboards with French horn and other orchestral flourishes, all built around the breathy coo of Jessie Stein. With its latest album, Animator, the Montreal-based band has made its most stirring and hypnotic record yet.
