August Wilson Talk Series: The Lloyd Richards Effect

Wednesday April 24 2024 • 12:05pm - 12:05pm ET

Stephen McKinley Henderson

Theater director Lloyd Richards, long-time Dean of the Yale School of Drama and Artistic Director of the National Playwrights Conference, discovered and championed August Wilson’s plays and directed six of them on Broadway.

WNYC’s Leonard Lopate explored one of the most successful artistic partnerships in American theater, in conversation with Constanza Romero, theater designer and Wilson’s widow. They were joined by Lou Bellamy, Artistic Director of Penumbra Theatre Company and Obie Award-winning director of Two Trains Running at Signature Theatre; Todd London, Artistic Director of New Dramatists, who presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to August Wilson in May 2003; Stephen McKinley Henderson, Associate Director of the August Wilson series; and Ebony Jo-Ann, who played the title role in The Greene Space’s reading of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
