Overview

Reporters Ilya Marritz (Trump, Inc.) and Sally Herships (The Heist) discuss the impacts of one of President Trump’s key legislative accomplishments: the 2017 tax cuts. The pair will examine the legislation’s impact, the economic theory behind it, and the officials who drafted and enacted the legislation.

Ilya Marritz is a senior reporter at WNYC and co-host of the duPont silver baton-winning podcast Trump, Inc., which is produced with ProPublica. His work has been appeared on NPR, Martketplace, On The Media, Planet Money, and in Time, The New Yorker, and the New York Daily News.

He’s the president, yet we’re still trying to answer basic questions about how his business works and who might be profiting from his administration: What deals are happening and who are they happening with?

Trump, Inc. is a joint reporting project from WNYC Studios and ProPublica that digs deep into those questions. We lay out what we know, what we don’t, and how you can help us fill in the gaps.

Sally Herships is a frequent contributor for NPR’s Indicator, a daily economics podcast produced by the Planet Money Team. She is Director of the Radio Program at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism and has reported for multiple outlets including the BBC, The New York Times, WNYC and Studio 360. Her 2016 audio documentary, As Many Leaves, produced for BBC Radio 4, was rated among the top ten podcasts of the year by Vulture.com.

The Heist is the story of a huge political swindle, how it happened, and how power works in a Donald Trump presidency. Reporters spent months behind the scenes: we get to know a big Republican donor, a senator who caves to political pressure, and the enigmatic Secretary of the Treasury, Stephen Mnuchin, who led the charge for these laws.
